A Village Through Time

Preserving Cotherstone’s rich heritage for future generations. Our digital archive captures the stories of our buildings, people, and landscape, creating a lasting record of village life.

Preserving Our Heritage Together

Building a Digital Archive of Cotherstone

Our Heritage Team are creating a comprehensive digital database documenting the rich history of Cotherstone. This ambitious project aims to capture and preserve the stories behind our buildings, the lives of people who've called this place home, and the changing environment that shapes our village character.

Our heritage archive goes beyond simple record-keeping. We're collecting photographs, maps,  documents, memories, and stories that bring our village's past to life. From the grand houses to the smallest cottages, from well-known families to everyday residents, from ancient field boundaries to modern developments - every piece of Cotherstone's story matters.

This is a community project in the truest sense. We rely on local knowledge, family photographs, personal memories, and historical documents shared by village residents past and present. Whether you have a single photograph or a trunk full of documents, your contribution helps build a comprehensive picture of how Cotherstone has evolved through time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I contribute to the heritage project?
We welcome any historical material about Cotherstone - photographs, documents, stories, or memories. You can upload them directly on to the website.
What kind of information are you looking for?
Anything that tells Cotherstone's story! This includes old photographs, family documents, memories of how places used to look, stories about local people, information about buildings and their uses, or knowledge about how the landscape has changed over time.
Do I need to be from Cotherstone to contribute?
Not at all! Many people with Cotherstone connections have moved away but still have valuable photographs, documents, or memories. We're interested in any information that adds to our understanding of the village's history.
Will my contributions be kept safe?
Absolutely. We handle all historical material with great care. Original documents and photographs are scanned and returned to you promptly. Digital copies become part of our permanent archive, properly catalogued and preserved for future generations.
Can I research my own family or house history?
Yes! Our Digital Hub provides free access to The Genealogist website and other research tools. Our Heritage Group can also provide guidance on researching local connections and using our growing archive.
How is this information organised?
Our digital database is organised into three main areas: Buildings (covering properties and their histories), People (documenting families and individuals), and Environment (recording how the landscape and village have changed over time).
Is the archive available to view?
Parts of our archive are available for research at The Old Chapel, and we're working to make more content accessible online. Contact us to arrange a research session or to find out what's currently available.
Who is involved in this project?
The project is a collaboration between The Old Chapel and the Heritage Trust, supported by volunteers from our Heritage Group and the wider community. Professional archival standards ensure proper preservation and accessibility of all materials.
